Toe nail fungus is a very common condition, often involving inflammation, yellowing, thickening and crumbling of toenails. Also known as onychomycosis, the condition can cause cracking, splitting and complete loss of toenails in some circumstances. Although it can be unsightly, it is not hard to treat. Home remedies often clear the condition within one to two months, foregoing the need to use expensive prescription medications.
Here are three easy-to-use and inexpensive home remedies that can work wonders on bad toe fungus:
Tea Tree Oil
With antiseptic as well as anifungal properties, tea tree oil is ideal for treating toenail fungus. Orange oil can be added to the mixture for more strength. To use tea tree oil, mix several drops in one teaspoon of olive oil, and then apply it to the affected toenails via cotton balls. Gently scrub after 10 minutes and rinse. This mixture also works on other skin infections. Repeat two to three times daily until the fungus disappears.
On its own, baking soda won’t do much to get rid of toenail fungus. It is, however, a fungistatic, meaning it prevents fungus from spreading because it is alkaline in nature. Fungus thrives in an acidic environment. Making a foot soak that incorporates baking soda can help alleviate fungus symptoms. Two different solutions can be readily made, one with white vinegar and the other with hydrogen peroxide and Epsom salt.
For either soak, you will need a foot bath in which to place your feet and towels for drying. For the vinegar soak, mix four to five tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of white vinegar and mix with enough water to cover your feet. For the second soaking solution, use one-half cup of baking soda, one-half cup of Epsom salt and one-quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with four cups of hot water. Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Which soak you choose, sit for 10 minutes, and then rinse and dry your feet. Repeat the process twice daily.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Another effective soak involves apple cider vinegar which can prevent the fungus from spreading while also killing bacteria and fungi. For this solution, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, Soak your feet for 30 minutes daily. A second option is to make an exfoliation scrub using coarse rice flow mixed with apple cider vinegar. Apply the paste on affected toenails, gently scrub the area and rinse.
