Dandruff is a medical problem that goes beyond gender, age and race. This scalp condition is caused by a fungus called Malassezia. This microbe is a normal part of the scalp. But when it feeds, it breaks down the natural part of the scalp into fatty acids that cause irritation. This also is the reason for the dryness and the itchiness on the scalp. This then leads to the dead skin cells accumulating into visible flakes. Malassezia live well in moist environments. This becomes a problem during summers because of the excessive humidity and sweating. There is no way to completely get rid of dandruff. But there are many home remedies that can be used to keep it under control.
1. Do not oil hair and keep it on for long.
It is not true that oiling is good for hair with dandruff. Applying oil will lead to more dandruff because oil is like food for Malazzesia. Applying oil to a dry and itchy scalp sounds good, but it will only make your dandruff condition worse.
Vinegar will help in treating itchy or dry skin. It also helps to eliminate dandruff-causing fungus and bacteria. This is due to the acidic content of vinegar. It is extremely beneficial to reduce flaking.
3. Baking Soda.
Baking soda acts like a scrub and rubs the scalp gently without irritating it. It removes all of the dead skin cells. This is important to ensure that there is no build up of flakes on the scalp. Baking soda also soothes the scalp and lowers redness and itching. This is because of because of its ex-foliation and anti-fungal properties. You can just add baking soda to your shampoo to get all of its benefits.
Neem extract plays a very important part in almost all skin medications. This is because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Use a very diluted amount of neem on the scalp. Concentrated amounts may irritate the skin further.
The pungent smell of the garlic clove may seem a bad remedy for some, but its medicinal value is definitely good. Garlic is extremely beneficial as an anti-fungal natural product. Just pound a clove or two of garlic into water and use it on your scalp to see very quick results. You can always mix in a little honey and ginger to eliminate the smell a bit.
6. Aloe Vera.
Aloe vera is very cooling and it mildly exfoliates the skin. It also has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Aloe vera is good to extract directly from the aloe vera plant. It is transparent and has a very thick consistency. This herb will calm down an irritated scalp and it will provide relief from inflammation.
Aspirin contains salicylic acid. This is the same ingredient that many medicated dandruff shampoos have. You will keep flaking in check by crushing two aspirins to a fine powder. Then add it your shampoo that you use to wash your hair.
Dandruff relief is no farther away than your refrigerator. Massage 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into your scalp and rinse the scalp with water. Then mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with 1 cup of water and rinse your hair with it. Do this every day until your dandruff disappears.
If you have a bad case of dandruff, wash your hair with your regular shampoo. Then rinse your hair with an alcohol-based mouthwash. Mouthwash’s has anti-fungal properties that will help eliminate dandruff-causing yeast from growing.
